Rugby League shoots itself in the foot again, holding the Superleague Grand final today at Old Trafford. Meanwhile a few miles down the road England Rugby Union play at Manchester Citys ground in their world cup game. Not to mention another international being played down south. Bad timing? League needs to get its act together, despite a 73,000 sell out at old Trafford, half the country doesn't know there's 2 codes of rugby! Just an observation....

You will just have to watch Twickenham @davidv. Sydney play both league and union, but Victoria are mad about their Aussie Rules.

Jen I can never work out Aussie Rules. Re the World Cup, though. I honestly believe Australia will be represented.

Dai, I think you may be right! I'm pretty sure they'd beat the errrr competition.... I've seen it on TV a couple of times and usually involves no rules whatsoever except a compulsory punch up every 5 minutes .... in a sleeveless top. Cherry I believe RL is the number 1 sport over there well ahead of Union. It really is superior in all respects over the frequently slow and dreary game of Union. I support Salford red Devils in superleague and they have like all teams a fair number of ex NRL players.

The roads were a nightmare all round the area yesterday @davidv , I'm surprised everyone got to the grounds for the rugby up here on time! The England RU team were supposed to be based at Salford's ground last week in the run-up to last night's match but I didn't spot any of them whenever we drove past - think they might have all been hiding in shame!

It was busy last night Sue, even around Peel Green when I went down to cut my Dahlia blooms, glad I wasn't anywhere near Town or Old Trafford. England were training at the AJ Bell, either gym work in the main building or on the fenced in training pitch next to the ground. In season I often go down and watch the under 19s play (free) on that pitch and spot those who'll make the grade for the first team.

David, I said the Ozzies would be represented, I didn`t say they would be playing IN the final. How can you say league is superior when the wusses can `t even scrum down properly. When a player gets tackled the tackler gets told by the ref` "please, can you let him go now". Only teasing.

Don't get me started Dai! hahaha The scrums in league only take 15 seconds not 15 minutes! No collapsing, wheeling, keeping the ball in.... they serve to get the forwards (2 less than yawniun) all in one place giving the backs space when the ball emerges. Refs say 'release' or 'held' in a tackle when it's clear the ball carrier isn't making further progress...speeds up the game Dai! Every player, props included need agility and passing skills, not just the ability to push. Burgess is clearly wasted in a sport where he rarely gets to touch the ball. Anyway, where's the 'Aussie Rules' World cup being held this time?

I used to love rugby, would never miss the 5 nations as it was then. I remember the year Scotland won the grand slam, the whole country went bananas.

Good one Dai! Hey do you remember back in the days when Union stars were signed by RL clubs? (Other way around now obviously) In the 70s Salford RL had a few converts. Do you remember a David Watkins? Welsh RU and Lions international. He was unbelievably good, running rings round people and kicking goals for fun, Absolute legend at Salford. He came back and stepped out onto the pitch at our old ground (the Willows) some years ago and it was like the messiah had come back, crowd went bananas, worshipped in Salford...

I was born about a half mile from David and his rugby playing brother, Stuart. When Dai signed to league he was totally villified down here. As was Stuart when he went north. I have also met Stuart since they both came back home.

Didn`t Dai Watkins go to league in the early 60`s? He was the first Welsh union player to go north. If I remember rightly, he got a fee of about £10,000.

Think it was the late 60s Dai, I can only remember him from being a little lad in the 70s. It was a record fee for a RL club. The money for the player himself cant have been that great an inducement since they were all part time even at the height of their success in the 70s. His autobiography is still obtainable (second hand) on Amazon and he underplays the reactions of people when he 'turned pro'. He gave Salford 10 good years and moved to Swinton for a while when he was past his best days. We had another Welshman Maurice Richards, a very stylish elusive runner and record try scorer.
