Well Dai if it's on Wikipedia it MUST be true! haha With full time training, proper nutrition to bulk up and the firm summer pitches he would excel in the modern game. Like Rob Burrow of Leeds he'd use his lack of height and lightning acceleration to advantage. You have to be fearless at that size and Watkins never took a backward step. Still one of my all time favourite players. I'm going to dig out his biography (The david Watkins story) later.

Barry John, I think, would also have done well in league. I`ve always believed he retired about 5 years too early.

My friend's son was at the match, but I haven't seen him. It would have been a brilliant game. I had to suffer Norwich being hammered by Newcastle (soccer).

Scotland were robbed, but the ref is only human, he shouldn`t be blamed. England, to be honest, were just not good enough. Wales were beaten by the best pass of the tournament so far. Northern Ireland are rebuilding what was a very good squad.

I watched the Welsh & Scottish games & thought they were both very unlucky to lose even though I don't know the rules in Rugby Union.

Those 2 games were the best for the 4 home nations Sue. Both teams were very unlucky not to be in the semi finals. Scotland especially.

Was good to see Rugby Union sides actually pass and run with the ball. Wales Scotland and Ireland deserve credit for playing open and positive Rugby Union, Refs shouldn't be criticised about decisions in my opinion, they call it how they see it. Accept the ref is always right, doesn't matter what the replay shows! If the Ref says it's Sunday, it's Sunday. End of. Footballers whine endlessly about decisions and even have the disgraceful Graham Poll undermining the Refs decisions in the morning papers. Sportsmanship, still alive and well in Rugby League and Union.

I do think there's a lot more respect shown to refs in rugby, I like the video ref. & the way the refs are miked up so you can hear their decisions ( I watch odd games on TV), not sure if it would work in football (too much bad language for a start! )but would like to see it tried in some form or other.

Agreed, sometimes in football you can lip read players swearing and snarling in the Refs face. Rugby players know it's an instant red card, fine and a ban so they generally keep their mouths shut. Most wouldn't argue anyway out of respect to the Ref. The video ref is not in every rugby game Sue, League or Union though people think it is. Ive only seen it when sky TV are televising the game and they put a huge screen in one corner of the ground for the fans. Refs generally only go to the video ref where a try is disputed. Most games, they make their own calls and stick to them. If they had a video ref in football, games would take 3 hours as every call would be disputed as refs have zero authority. I remember a televised RL game a few years back, Henry Paul was backchatting to the ref all through the game. The ref stopped play and said to him " Look Henry, one of us is the referee and I'll give you a clue, it's not you. Now shut it" Total authority, exactly as it should be.

I totally agree David. soccer refs should have the same power to send off abusive players as rugby refs.

Dai, further our chat about Mr Watkins. Heres a pic I dug out, He's lifting the Championship Trophy here in Salfords heyday back in the early 70s. The giants of Wigan St Helens and Leeds were outplayed by lowly Salford. They had a handful of notable GB internationals that season. Watkins at the front, Chris Hesketh (GB captain) Welsh 2nd row Colin Dixon, and 4th back, legend Paul Charlton at full back. He was in the Guiness records until recently for 33 tries in a season from that position. Watkins was also a world record holder with 221 goals in a season. Truly a legend, best step in the game and made as many tries as he scored. As you can see, the players then weren't as well nourished as todays superleague athletes!
