Found this very distinctive and rather well built spider the other day whilst merchandising pots (something I hate doing, the pots that is and thankfully something I rarely need to do). I have seen these many times over the years and knew of the females devotion to her young. This is completely altruistic as she even gives her life in the end to her young that drain her body dry after hatching. This first meal sets them up and as in all things in nature is geared to maximise the survival of her genes into the future. Anyway, here are a couple of pics I took of her. Thankfully I was wearing gloves as her large chelicerae (jaws/fangs) can easily penetrate human skin. Black Lace Weaver (Amaurobius ferox).

Taking a chance there with your gloves off in the last photo then Fractal! I'm not sure if I've seen one of them, I might have just thought it was a chunky house spider if I have though. Love the photos.

I didn't know we had poisonous spiders in Britain Fractal. I have a pet spider in the conservatory which I could put a collar and lead on and take for a walk. I might have another look at it through new eyes.

I hate spiders, especially those house spiders that like to run across floors in the Autumn, but Looking at this on All Hallows Eve, has certainly made me feel more arachnophobic
