The Met Office are in a bit of a fluster over El Nino. They are predicting unusually severe weather over the Winter period, including Gales, flood-level rain, -14 degree temperatures and - for all I know - plagues of frogs. There is a somewhat dramatic and breathless article about this in the usually-sedate Torygraph . It's all down to a 140-year record El Nino, apparently. I shall be getting some paving stones from my Sister this weekend to add extra ballast to my Polytunnel and misc growhouses. If anyone has allotments (or houses) in low-lying areas, you may want to ... well... dunno really. Buy a boat ?

Reckon if I managed through the winter 1962/63 and (I think) 1947 plus one or two other winters I should cope ok. daitheplant still managed to overwinter his dahlias during the last ice age so I understand

It's still standing. Obviously, the glazing and wood surround have rotted away... but you can still see the support pillars.

They're scaremongering again ... they do it every year. They're bound to be right if they do it often enough ... we'll have to wait and see.

They've never said "144 year El Nino event" before. I hear what you're saying, Hywel, but I'm not comforted by it Remember Michael Fish ?

Hywel, if you follow the wildlife, you will see that, God help us, Roofus is right. Apparently all the signs are leading to the worst winter since 1962/63.

I hated that winter..... started to snow on Boxing Day '62 and we still had same snow on the ground the following Easter. I got umpteen chilblains as we only had wellingtons for wet weather, in those days. We didn't miss a day's schooling, though!

I'm 456 ft above sea level, so I don't have to worry about flooding But if it's like 1962 this village could be cut off again. I remember walking every day to school too dianthus

Please don't even mention the word 'floods' - not after last time! At least we have flood defences this time...if they work!

I agree with @hywel. I think El Nino is a summer activity.
I live in an area where the roads are built above the level of the surrounding fields. Flood plains are used in winter for flood protection so animal grazing is moved. The farms, like ours are criss crossed with huge drains which are pumped into the Ouse and then through Denver Sluice. The Fens are low lying, but efficiently drained.

daitheplant I don't believe wildlife know what the weather is going to do next January and February. They react to what it's doing now. I also don't believe plants know what the winter's going to be like. Lots of berries only mean that it was a good pollinating season last spring.
I am not conforted by it either roofgardener. They could be right, ..... but they could also be wrong, like they've been for the last umpteen winters and summers also (last year they said again it was going to be very hot with droughts etc - and we had nothing but rain)
Didn't Michael Fish say we were not going to have a storm, but we had one. He was wrong. They could be wrong again this year. They are most of the time, but if they keep saying something often enough, they'll be right once in a while. We'll just have to wait and see.
