It is ordinary ginger, but fresh. It is skinless when fresh and doesn't have stringy bits which don't grate.

I always thought that the 'stem' ginger you get in jars was from the 'stems' I didn't know that it was the freshly picked roots which eventually turn into the drier root ginger you buy. It's worth trying it from a piece of root from the supermarket isn't it & growing it as a houseplant as James Wong suggests, might give it go as well. I like James Wong, I've got his 'Grow Your Own Drugs' book & keep looking at his 'Grow For Flavour' one which has been on sale cheap on The Book People, I might buy that one as well.

SueA you sound as if you would be giving cannabis a try! I like James Wong and he seems acceptable to our established gardeners. Australia's ginger famously comes from Buderim in Queensland. Prince Charles at one time years ago said he liked the ginger chocolates from there.

I know Cherry , the title of the book put me off as I don't even like taking prescription drugs! It was mainly because he showed you how to make things like herbal remedies & creams & lotions etc. from plants you could grow in the garden. I bet Aussie ginger is superb freshly picked.

Buderim Ginger are in my address book Cherry I used to use their ginger in preserve many years ago, and latterly in a sweet n sour stir fry sauce product. The climate there produces a less fiery rhysome than from China and other parts of the far east.
