Recommendations have been made before, but I have not taken much notice. Now, I am in a position to buy a new camera so I want to know what to buy. Some people on the forum take fantastic pictures. I am thinking of Fractal, esther, SueA, steve and others. Would you like to help me out please?

I'm looking for a new camera again myself Cherry but haven't found the ideal one yet. It seems that the camera market is changing as everyone is now just taking photos with their phones & some of those are pretty sophisticated now. It depends what you want to use the camera for & if you want to carry it around with you a lot, I do so I prefer a compact camera but like one with a big zoom, I'm looking for something like 20 or 30x & a macro facility for close-ups. The one I've got now is a Panasonic Lumix TZ6 but it's an old model. The more expensive digital SLR cameras take better photos but are bigger & heavier & you have to change the lenses for close-ups, long shots etc.

I have a Panasonic Lumix TZ-40 which is nice, although I loved my old Lumix TZ-65 too, and still keep it to use sometimes. I find the TZ-40 is brilliant in low light, indoors. The TZ-65 i'm better with outdoors so far, but probably because I am more familiar with the buttons and find myself knocking the touch screen on the TZ-40 a bit too much. They're both about the same weight and easy pocket sizes.

I recently bought a Nikon Coolpix L330 Which has a 26x optical zoom, wide angle and good macro options, this is a bridge camera which is more of a SLR shape but I find still small enough to get in a coat pocket, you can't go wrong with any of the big manufacturers these days

Graham has his really good camera, Canon eos but I use a Fuji finepix and love it. I took the picture of the orange moon I posted a while back with it.

My CAMRA recommendation would be a bottle of Cwtch Welsh Red Ale, which was the 2015 gold medal winner. Oh wait... you said CAMERA ?? I thought you said... Never mind. <takes bottle back>

Yes, mine is a Panasonic Lumix TZ 18, not that high up in the range and getting on a bit now. As Steve says, any of the big manufacturers have excellent models you can't go far wrong with though.

FWIW cherry, I would visit a camera shop and pick up several models and see what takes your fancy then check online for best price. Usually these things are a compromise between state of the art and state of the bank balance.

It looks like I will need to buy from the sheiks in Dubais. I have never shopped here because I have been in a huge hurry to get from the in gate to the out gate and a train running parallel to the terminal is the best way to go. This time I am staying in an airside hotel overnight.

So far the Panasonic Lumix DMC TZ60 is looking likely. I might be able to have it delivered to Aberdeen airport.

It looks like a great camera Cherry, but too rich for my blood. I'm looking at the Canon PowerShot SX410. It doesn't have all of the features of the Panasonic; no GPS,WiFi,or Near Field Communications. However, it has a decent 30x optical zoom and - apparantly - very good Macro performance. (although it is apparantly a bit fiddly to set up for Macro mode ?? ). It costs around £120 or thereabouts. Mind you... steve 's suggestion of the Nikon Coolpix L330 is tempting as well ! Actually.... I might follow sweetpea 's suggestion and pop into a camera shop (or PC world or Curries)... and have a 'hands on' with some first.
