ian what is the magic ingredient in spent mushroom compost that you think is good for dahlias? Is it something that improves the soil or is something that boosts the nutrients for the dahlias themselves?

Mushrooom compost is pretty much inert @ moonlight. What are you worries about it? I was just wondering. I am lucky here I have been getting very well rotted manure.

Hi Lou, why is he ill ? Jack is fine I was speaking to him three nights ago. He was very busy laying flag stones. The piece on gardeners word was good but not nearly long enough although he did get virtually 5 minutes. Which for a 29minute programme is good, but yes would have been better 20minutes long.

Happy to report that I've been waking some of my Tubers up. I might be Months behind you all but I am very happy that I have eyes. Especially happy that my Garden Friends is alive, even if I did discover a slug on it. Removed.

Pleased to hear Jack is ok ian. I thought someone posted that he had been ill. My mistake!!. I was quite surprised he was on for so long....its usually just a quick piece. All in all an excellent programme this week, and with The Alnwick Garden being included.

Well with 900 cuttings in the propagator today I started to take off the tubers from the bench. I have given away over 200 and another 200 on their way for the Harrogate Spring show starting on Thursday for sale on the National Dahlia Society Northern committee stand. I have done approx 2000 cutting this season.
Now time to get the plot ready calcified seaweed and mushroom compost to be rotivated in over the next week (that will help to raise the ph slightly) Q4 added then the mypex back on top, spray any bits of weeds then I am ready for planting come the third week in May. Lovely jubbley
Then it's dreaming of what might be.

Wow!!!! Thats some numbers. We'll be lucky to get 9 cuttings away at the moment lol. We have started to get the planting space ready, with the first hand dig and raking done on sunday. we have signs of life in the greenhouse thanks to very kind friends like yourself and Raymond. We are definitely not in a rush to plant out as we still have Frost here.

ian do you think lifting the tubers later helped them produce a lot more cuttings ? I can only dream of taking that amount of cuttings and having the space for them ! Hehe I think this year I will leave mine in until December. I found some bits of tuber when digging the plot all perfect no rot .
