First of all David, well done at the show mate, there's nothing better than a well supported local show. Secondly, your Rob's Symbol look terrific, I think it's a better bloom than Clearview Louise, but then again I think Louise should be a large, rather than a medium.....but hey, what do I know . Both my pot tubers of Rob's are now cut back, so it's lovely to see your photos. Had a good show today, 7 firsts, and one second, plus best exhibit in show. And going back to Cat's earlier post about bad judges not knowing their balls from their decs, and their miniatures from their smalls, and getting NAS for no reason. Well I got a dose of that today. Got NAS for a vase of Gateshead Festival for being over sized, when they went through the small ring with a half inch to spare!! The show secretary said he must have confused the classes as it was a miniature/small dec class, say he might have thought it was just a miniature class. Hope the judging at the National is of a better standard.......only kidding guys, NDS judges are the best!!!!!
Jomanda Best exhibit in show, Sir Alf. Shame the exhibitors were down on last year, but still enough to make a decent show. great show results I like your sir alf you have grown it well , it does put you off local showing when you get done like that , all the time put in and travel to get N A S , see you tomorrow.

Did the Beverley Chysanthemum and Dahlia show today, managed 4x 1sts, 4 x 2nds and 1 x 3rd and retained the cup for overall points, though I think I sneaked the latter on Quantity rather then quality.

I have heard our own Raymond has done really well at Kent this weekend even getting a first with TELs Birkenhead Garden Friends beating Dave Spencer for collerettes. Look forward to hearing full details from Raymond, no doubt when he is a little less busy after Wisley congratulations to ian for his super results this weekend too. Speaking of which good luck to all showing at Wisley.

Thanks Raymond, I was really pleased with that one. See you've had some success at Wisley and the Kent show. That's some achievement to get a first at that level. Yes I had a poor start and couldn't make a vase for the first couple of shows, but they're coming thick and fast right now! Got some Westerton southside coming into bloom and they look great to me, quite unusual and Lakeland Autumn too. Well done Ian and Steve on your Wisley success, nice to see the Northerners showing em how it's done! :;

For the past 2 seasons I have struggled with the weather, All my Kenora challengers are watermarked this year , so its covers for me next year, Johndoe, what are the dimensions of your covers? and is the plastic all in one sheet? I was thinking of using white tarps, do you think it would block too much light? Did a local show last week and got 2 x 1sts, a 2nd and a 3rd, and been staging today for the beverley show, seeing the quality of some of the blooms grown under covers has made my mind up. Sorry Alan, I meant to answer your question at the weekend. The covers measure 14m X 9m. It's all one sheet of diffused polythene, 200g, 800msg. Got it from Robinsons polytunnels, found them to be a good company with a very helpful customer service department. Now sure if a tarp would be of any use, maybe somebody on the forum could help you with that. I hope that helps.

I have just realised I have a new roll of diffused polythene in the garage, Its a spare cover for the poly tunnel, it measures 7.3 x 11 meters, its UV stabilised. This should be fine then, so thats my project for the winter

You spend the best part of a year, starting them off, cutting, nurturing, picking the healthiest select few for planting out. Getting the soil right, planting out, watering, feeding, disbudding, and generally spending every spare minute cajoling them along till the blooms are ripe for the big show. Cut them at a silly time when every sane person is still in bed. Cane them into buckets and put them in a cool dark space till zero hour. Then bang....your struck down with an ear infections that makes you end up looking like the elephant man . A & E is not the easiest place to be, when you should be at Wisley............GUTTED!!!!!! Still, it could have been worst, Next week at Harrogate would have been a catastrophe, as the hotel has already been paid for .
On a far, far better note. Well done to everybody on here who won so many fantastic prizes. Ian K, Raymond, Steve B, well done lads your vases were top notch. Last but not least, our very own Master of the Dahlia(well for this year anyway, hehe). Mr Ian (I haven't got a lot) Sutherland. Did tell you at the Midlands that the Terry Clarke was yours for the taking .
Some of the blooms that never made it to Wisley. At least the old peoples home had something to smile about!!!!
