I had to transplant two different varieties of thyme plants and a sage because the thymes were dying back. They grew like topsy in Norfolk, but here they are still dying back. They turn black and then I cut it out and there is very little left on the two plants. The sage is unkillable and going mad. Pity it is only the grey sort. Oregano is also struggling. They don't seem to like the tropics. I don't think I keep them too wet as they are not watered like the tropical plants. Can anyone shed some light on where I am going wrong?

I can only think that like you Cherry they're not too keen on the boiling hot humid weather where you are! Thyme & oregano like sunny, fairly dry spots but they even manage to grow in all the rain in my garden in a large container so maybe you could try cutting your plants back a bit to see if they revive & planting up some of the cuttings in containers & moving them around to see where in the garden they do best.

Try a south-facing window, indoors, where it will be less humid... and hopefully where the air is circulating.
You certainly have different growing issues now, Cherry

roofgardener there is no weather here. It changes over a day from 34-36 down to 28-30. I have worked it out. The plant has gone even blacker overnight and it must be the humidity. We did it together dianthus because I looked at it a couple of hours ago and thought this must be it. After all, the Mediterranean climate is quite different and thyme grows wild in Scotland. I rained overnight too. I am covered in bites and have just been emptying the fallen palm fronds which collect water, therefore, mozzies.

The lemon thyme is quite dead now and the other is nearly gone. We were at a proper nursery north of Townsville this afternoon and they don't even stock the thymes or marjoram. They don't like humidity. There it is.

They don't like humidity. There it is. You'll have to buy it from the frozen cabinet, so you'll have some for your British recipes.
Just think of all the lovely tropical foods you can now get, that were expensive or scarce in the UK.

Could you not grow in indoors Cherry? if you have air conditioning they might survive with it being cooler.
