Whilst I've been getting all excited about landing in the new garden (22 April) and getting plants growing in the greenhouse - somehow I totally forgot that I will be away for two weeks in June!
As I'll only have been in the new place for approx 5 weeks before we head off (Nordic fjords cruise - oh my!) and given that I work from home (don't get out much!) it's unlikely I'll have enough time to get to know someone well enough to ask them to water for me.
Any thoughts to overcome this most welcome.

That is how you make friends piskie. You will just need to ask your neighbour. I am sure he/she will oblige. Swap plants of course and ask early.

I tore up an old towel into strips put one end in the plant pot and the other in a bucket of water, but they were big pots

There are a variety of cheap, unpowered "self watering" systems available piskie. You can even get away with just 2 litre plastic lemonade bottles (with holes drilled into the screw-cap), placed upside down in the pots. They're not brilliant, but they would 'buy' you several days even in hot weather ? Mind you, I think grindle's capilliary action towells sound like a good idea; I may try this myself.

piskie , 2 weeks in June, in Cheshire - not far from Manchester, just leave all your plants outside with saucers under them - the torrential rain will water them for you! I think a combination of all the suggestions is a good idea, towels/capillary matting/upturned bottles on anything in the greenhouse or pots & anything outdoors just with saucers under them well-watered before you go & clumped together in a bit of shade & maybe a kind neighbour to keep an eye on them.

Two weeks after I moved in here, my neighbours went away to Toronto, so they were very relieved to find a gardener had moved in, and looked after their watering for a month!
I still have the teatowel!

I looked after a member of our fuchsia group's "SHOW" plants for a month That could have been risky, if we'd had odd weather conditions.

aw piskie all these suggestions are good and I have tried some myself but since moving to Wales my problem is the opposite. how to stop the pots being waterlogged and the plants drowning. The outdoor ones that is. Enjoy your trip. Norway is a beautiful country although tends to get a bit chilly at times. Unless it has changed for the worse it was also a very clean country and friendly. We used to do our winter warfare training there. if you get the opportunity do try a REAL sauna

Piskie, if it is only the plants in the greenhouse, then why not buy an automatic, solar powered, watering system? They cost about £75.
