Enjoyed a lovely walk yesterday (Sunday) in lovely sunny weather though the air temperature was only about 7 degrees. Perfect for a reasonably strenuous walk in fact.
From the car park (orange dot) we set off and headed for the ford to join the path through the delightfully named Happy Valley which adjoins the entrance to the Harthope Valley which we would cross before climbing north east up Hell Path towards Wooler Common and drop down into the town of Wooler. From here we crossed the main road (A697) and headed east to climb up to Weetwood Moor. Apart from fantastic views back over to Wooler and beyond to the hills behind, there are large rocks with cup and ring marks on them dating back as far as 6000 years ago! I remember being taken here on a school trip in the pouring rain over 40 years ago so it would be nice to see them in the sunshine with a greater appreciation of them today.
After this, the drop down back to just south of Wooler and back to our starting point isn't well signed but easy enough to see where we needed to be by way of walking the edges of kale and rape fields.
Unfortunately, this app that mapped my route completely drained my battery and ends with the red dot on Weetwood Moor
The delightfully named Happy Valley
Hell Path (actually very lovely spot with gorgeous view back to Harthope Valley behind and the perfect cone of Hedgehope
We went through this gate and through this conifer wood which after a short gentle climb drops back down into open undulating landscape of Wooler Common before dropping down into Wooler.
Wooler Common
After initial climb up the slopes leading to Weetwood Moor, this gave lovely views back to Wooler and the landscape behind we had just come from.
(Nic pulling a stupid face...)
Wooler
The open flat valley just north and east of Wooler
We climbed on and up bumping into a regular customer at the garden centre I work at (not Lou) and we set off for the search for cup and ring marks. After being given a vague direction by a walker with dogs we found them...well, one. Couldn't find the huge rock with about six on it unfortunately. Maybe another time...
From here on we made our way back down to the main road and back to our start just south of Wooler. This trig point must be the high point of Weetwood Moor. Nice view back to Hedgehope on the left with the Cheviot to the right.
Half way down we could see Hurlestone Tower at Lilburn south east of Wooler. It was only built in 2000 but is a fully furnished conference venue apparently.
Back at the bottom, crossing the ford and back to the car.
