My David Austen rose 'St Swithun' has some serious issues... all the flowers keep coming out like this, and really tiny. It had a few flowers like this last year too. It has a few yellow leaves/bit of black spot but I've treated that, and the previous years, it (and my other roses) have always got over it. The leaves look OK as a whole, actually. It's in a big pot but shouldn't yet be pot bound and it has been fed reasonably well. I was hoping to plant it out at some point this year. Does anyone know whats up/if it's treatable/will it spread to my other roses, please?

I suspect that it will be pot bound. Feeding doesn't stop the roots from filling up the container. As far the malformed flower goes, it looks like a physiological condition caused from oscillating watering during the development of the flower when young. Once this starts, the flower will come out malformed. Don't worry about it though as once in the ground (always better for roses) it should be fine.

Thank you Steve, I will stick it in the garden as soon as possible then. As long as it's not a disease that's going to spread I can wait for it to sort itself out.
I didn't think it was pot bound simply as it's been in that pot a very short time, but it's certainly true that my watering was a bit patchy whilst we moved house!

Another thing which can sometimes cause 'wonky' flowers like that Bess is if something has affected the buds when they were tiny such as being nibbled by insects, slugs etc. & the flower doesn't develop properly but as Fractal says I wouldn't think it's any kind of disease or likely to spread.

It doesn't look nice Roofy, not really. A lot of the funny shaped roses have lots of brown petals too, you just can't see it well on that one.
Thanks SueA, it's possible the buds might've got interfered with by insects. I hope the Rosaclear will deal with that as well as the little bit of black spot it's got, if that's the case.
