Right folks as some of you may have gathered I am having a lot of trouble with internet connectivity. a few years back we were on Talk Talk with no particular problems then Maureen decided to economise and switched to Primus part of New Call as it was cheaper. Ever since we have had problem after problem. Indeed it is off more than it is on. No cable round here only so called broadband ie. ADSL I have told her enough is enough and am going to switch. She is adamant she doesn't want BT and my daughter who is quite savvy is with virgin and reckons that is Cr*p too. So what do you reckon is the best provider to go with remembering that we are in Southwest Wales. (yes I know) Cost has to come into it of course but what is most important afaic is reliability. One of my boys seems to think post office but am prepared to listen to any and reccommendations TIA

AOK... firstly sweetpea.. are you SURE it is the providers fault ? We had HUGE daily problems with BT on an ADSL... but it turned out to be all down to a design fault in the BT router, and one that is easy to fix. How familiar are you with computers, and which version of windows are you on ? (on at least one computer that we can use to test the principle ? ). Ideally, this computer needs to be connected to the router by a cable, and NOT wireless. Do you know how to set the TCP/IP parameters on your network card ?

I was with Talktalk, but after being unable to see my emails for a fortnight, and then being told they were all 'lost' , I changed to Plusnet
So far so good ... and they're cheaper.
I do get trouble with the pages changing slowly though, or sometimes not at all, but that's because my laptop is old and about to conk out.

Hi roofy please don't think I am ignoring you as have responded several times just to lose when I click post.
Right then, On windows 10 on wi fi but could probably connect laptop direct to router if required but would involve too much faffing about to do that with the desktop which is in a different area. A friend of mine who repairs/builds computers for a living reckons the router is probably at fault but as the provider won't respond I am unable to get a replacement router from them. Even when working everything is desperately slow almost but not quite like dial-up. Re TCP/IP parameters, not sure so, over to you now roofy [/font] ps I still have my old TALK TALK router but doubt if I could use it now.

I`m with Virgin and I am more than happy with it. However, We do have cable. We had cable in Surrey and it was brilliant. When it started the difference after dial-up was unbelievable. First with mercury then it became blueyonder then something else but not just fast, supersonic more like

AOK. sweetpea, if your ISP is not responding/co-operating, then you wouldn't be able to put a new router in ANYWAY, as you probably won't know the ADSL username and password (which is programmed into the router). So perhaps a change of ISP's is the only answer ? Have you tried writing to your current ISP threatening to change ? That might spur them into life ? Failing that; BT are stolid, but usually adequate. However, their router is poor, and will start failing after 8 months. Talk Talk; used to have atrocious customer service, but seemed to have improved of late ?

Failing all Roofus suggested, you could always use snail mail.

I have heard that BT infinity is good. We are on BT, it used to be very reliable but lately its dropping out fairly often. Being in the wilds of outer Mongloia aka north east Scotland we don't get infinity yet. Most folks I know are on bt so can't really give you any heads up.

I'd bet that your dropouts are actually caused by the Home Hub 3 router unit ?
Does re-powering the router "cure" the dropouts ? (for a while ? )

It does indeed Roofster, I'm not sure if it's a 2 or 3 hub we have but we've had it for yonks.

Do you use it for wireless rosie, or just plug a computer directly into it on a cable ? (or both).
