I can't remember in which section i was lamenting my Lonicera 'Copper Beauty' but the gist of it was, its large leaves were being stripped perfectly cleanly away from the stems, and some getting scattered across the garden ..... meaning it was forever being 'pruned' and its growth was non existent I presumed it to be birds using it for nests so i thought i'd try the old hanging CD method and it worked Loop string/twine through the CD and hang it from the obelisk, in this case, and the hanging, circular, spinning, shiny disk seems to keep the birds away ! I've not had a single leaf stripped in a week and the new growth, aswell as the older leaves, are finally getting a chance to grow and stay put. I hope this continues to work. The obelisk doesn't look particularly attractivee with CDs hanging from it but it's worth putting up with the ugliness if the leaves have a chance to grow.

I might just try this on the Camellia Donation which always gets eaten by the deer.

You are on top form Sweetpea. I thought the Bird Scarers referred to the gas type. They are switched to automatic, but this is not always reliable, and sometimes the farmer has to go out to the village to switch the scarer off.

I prefer to encourage the birds and If they cause any damage then protect the crop with netting or similar.

I agree SP, nothing wrong with birds and fish-netting is very effective. In fact I've always liked the combination

I prefer to encourage the birds and If they cause any damage then protect the crop with netting or similar. I don't like the idea of netting though, birds feet getting tangled etc. i'd rather train them to stay in specific areas - which seems to work. The birds are still all over the front garden, they just no longer go near that particular obelisk !
