OH got a letter purporting to come from Barclays Bank. It looked authentic, and he was asked to ring them re. his account. When he did, he was put through the usual rigmarole of 'press 1 for this or 2 for that' etc. It all seemed above board until they asked for part of his account number at which alarm bells rang - after he had done what they said!!!
He terminated the call and tried ringing Barclays immediately, who said the number in the letter was not theirs.
I suggested that he should check his account and stop the card immediately, which he did within minutes of the call.
Yesterday we took the letter into the bank and talked to a young man who checked the letter and confirmed it was a scam letter. He checked with their fraud department and 'they' had tried to find out if he still had his business account attached to the current one...the girl was suspicious as 'the voice sounded too young for a man of OH's age' so she sensibly refused to give out any info.
Fortunately, he had transferred most of the money from this account to a better one recently, or they would have cleaned him out.
Apparently once these scammers have enough info, they can access any accounts you might have including paypal, so please be aware that even an official looking letter can be a scam.
All this was reported to the Police.

I've never heard of that one Geranium, it's very worrying isn't it. It doesn't sound random either does it as they've got your husband's address & knew he might have had a business account at Barclays, good job Barclays were suspicious & you reported it straight away. The only bank scam ones I've seen myself are emails where they say there's been some unusual activity on your account & ask you to click through & check details etc. but usually it's not even a bank I use & no way would I ever click through anything on an email to do with money.

It pays to be vigilant, there are many unscrupuolous people out there. Glad it's all sorted out Geranium. We did get hacked once by someone in Canada buying subscription tv, the bank spotted it as soon as it happened luckily and we got the money back that was taken.

How horrible some people are. I'm glad the business has been sorted out and the police know about it.
I've had several scam phonecalls recently from someone who thinks I am with Talktalk, but I left them a while ago so when the caller said she was from Talktalk I got suspicious.
I must say I got angry with two of the callers. I told them they were thieves and that they were bad people. I also told them to get themselves a proper job instead of stealing from innocent people. I told them they'd be caught one day. The strange thing is that they listened to everything I said right up until I slammed the receiver down on them ! I haven't had any calls for over a week now.

you have to be very vigilant these days with so many scams around, I find if I have one from a 'company' I always put the phone down then ring that company back to see if it is legitimate

Thats very sensible grindle. There really are some evil people out there. How would they feel if they lost money by a scam, not very happy I would assume.
