It definitely isn't ground ivy - and I can see what you mean about a speedwell, but it's not one of those either. The leaves are a darker green, it's a strong plant with tough stems and wiry roots. The flowers aren't at at like a speedwell. I will try to find another one to dig up and show you the whole thing, roots and all.

why not pot one up and see if it flowers. Then we will all know what it is you can then dig all the others out to your hearts content

I know the wretched things DO flower if I miss one, and I found a plant up in a nook near the compost bin today - it's an upright plant, and this photo shows it a little more clearly. It has had flowers, so you can see what the form of them was like. Here's the dead flower a bit closer up. Does that give you any more clues as to its identity?

Could it be a type of marjoram? is it aromatic when crushed?

Now I have seen the old flowers I think I know what it is. It looks like Wood Sage (Teucrium scorodonia).

I've got Prunella, Steve - the native as well as the cultivated one, so I know it's not that, although I agree the leaves look similar. It isn't Wood sage either, Steve_N - I googled that and the flower's different. I'll see if it's aromatic today.

agree not prunella nor do I think its an origanum as flower form wrong. how about Calamintha sylvatica? its another reasonable fit for the dead flower form.

Calamintha is a possibility, I think. I've just looked in my 'Collins'. Tell you what - whatever it is, it's an absolute pain!
Thanks for all the suggestions!

I looked at 'Keeble Martin' concise british flora, from the 60's, they are excellent diagrams and the flowers ook a 'dirty purple' lets hope this is the little devil.
