There are the regular ones that you see in all the supermarkets, then those Maracanã ones, which are smaller and more round, and Jordan almonds, which are long and narrow. I haven't seen those for years, as I suspect the wars in the area of Jordan have bombed out all the trees.

I think you mean Marcona almonds dianthus - the Maracana is a football stadium in Brazil (well that's the one I know, I think it's a bird as well amongst other things).

You are probably right, SueA I was too lazy to get the food book out. However, when I later checked on Jordan almonds, most of the internet posts think they are sugar-coated dragées, rather than the long, narrow variety grown along the country's river banks, and used to be in those triangular packs of Moscatel raisins.

Yes you are right SueA they are called Marcona almonds and that is what I am growing. The Marcona almond, sometimes known as the “Queen of Almonds,” are exported from Spain. They are shorter, rounder, softer, and sweeter than the California variety. They can be roasted in olive oil and then sprinkled with sea salt, mmmmmm luverly! Also the Maracana is a spanish dance song by Los del Río .............. oh, no thats the Macarena

Sorry I haven't been on for a while guys, no excuse, but have been really busy with Almond harvesting etc ......... however I am calling on your expertise in identifying the terrible infestation that happened today in my olive grove.
Several trees were "attacked".
Leaves and shoots were stripped from their branches within minutes, you could literally watch the leaves disappear.
Pictures to follow
