I have just received 10 large bags of manure from a stable with the promise of more Now I`m wondering how to best use it . Hubby wants to dump it on the rhubarb and 4 veg bed now but I`m wondering if spring would be better , as we get torrential rain here over winter and the goodness might be washed out . Any advice ?

Use it as a mulch now LB, the worms will get it down into the soil. Manure adds some nutrients to the soil, but it is more of a soil conditioner.

Old fashioned advice was Manure in Spring to warm the soil, mulch in Autumn to seal in the heat.

Hi Ladybird, Is the stable manure fresh or well rotted. Only use stable manure if it is at least a year old. Now is the time to apply manure as a mulch. I have completed about one third of my garden with mulch and will dig it in When spring arrives.

I don't think there's a right or wrong answer to this. It's probably a case of what suits you best. Monty Don suggested on Gardeners' World the other week covering the veg patch with rotted compost and leaving over winter for the worms and weather to work in. In one of the local free magazines the gardening expert was suggesting digging in well rotted manure now. I must say I've always rough dug the garden now, and let the frosts help break the lumps down before digging some compost or manure pellets into it in the spring before sowing.
