I have planted Allium bulbs which are a tall variety. When they are over, in my garden they will make a space where couch grass can thrive, or I could plant a later flowering plant over them. I have a Royal Bumble Sage going spare. Is it wise to plant two items in one space? Is this a mistake I make because I do a lot of this?

I have planted later flowering perennials over the top of bulbs, i have not had any problems with them.

My alliums grow quite happily (and seed) amongst herbaceous perennials. The allium foliage can look very tatty so its a good idea to mix them with other plants to hide the foliage as it dies back and leaves just the seed heads.

I always plan to do this...but rarely succeed. People here with more expertise than I have probably manage it.

I plant over bulbs, with perennials but not alliums, Geraniums post has just made correct myself.

I plant closely - it gets over several problems and also cuts down on weeds. I wouldn't plant on top of alliums, though - they're so strong that they could easily push a perennial out of the ground. Close, yes indeedy. I do plant on top of crocuses and small bulbs though.
