Hi Cat. Yes, it seems a shame to cut them back so hard, but needs must!! The benefits at show time far out way the sadness at cutback time. The netting I use, I get from a company called Suregreen, the link is to the page is below. I used it for the first time last year after using stock fencing before, which is quite unforgiving. Hope the young Champ had a great birthday, and quite right too, Never working on your birthday has always been one of my top rules .
I brought the 100 metre roll.

Hi again, just a quick question as I now have quite a lot of buds appearing.
Do you remove the calyx (sp) on all of your dahlia s or only up to a certain size or not at all?
I noticed David Gillam doing it on one of his Poms on his recent videos and wondered if it is standard practice on all dahlia s.
Thanks
Johnjess

Hi johnjess , No removing calyx is just something for the poms to help with petal lay. and it does make a difference. I suggest leaving one to compare on the same plant so you can see for yourself the difference. Also pinching them off nice and young does make it easier

Hi JJ yes removal of the calyx is mainly required on poms to allow the bloom to dress back to the stem however some others may benefit from this action eg Blyton Everest is better after the removal of the calyx as so do some miniatures

Yesterday we checked each dahlia carefully and adjusted their - grown on a side bud or lateral (as per advice ) we have had to adjust a few to early shows but generally for the shows we want we are doing ok. It's chucking the rain and thunder around here as I type - saves getting the hoses out tonight

At last, we can now post pictures nice and easy. Just click on 'add image to post', and follow instructions. The picture will appear when you click, 'create post'.
So here's a couple of pictures from today after cutting back to numbers need, and plants I'm doing for a friends wedding on the 5th of August.
Blyton Shiraz tester. Hoping the buds for the wedding are as nice
Challenger, Go America, Westerton Lilian, and Valentine all de-branched to numbers now. Just a good feeding plan and disbudding to keep a close eye on now.

Looking good well done Thanks Cat. Loved your video by the way, plants looking really healthy. Looking forward to meeting you and the little champ at Wisley, not long now!! Just sent my entries for the Midlands show on the 26th of August, plants looking as good as I've had at this stage, fingers crossed they carry on behaving . Covers and hot spot tape arrived today, and wouldn't you just know, the weathers appalling, rain and high winds for the next few days . Looks like I'll have to put up umbrella's for the Sir Alf's, they are the top table flowers for the wedding on the 5th!!!! Good luck with all your shows.

Despite the windy conditions, we managed to get the first plot covered yesterday. All now battened down safely and the large and Giants are now protected from the weather. Going to add windbreak at the prevailing wind end for a bit of extra protection.
Just need to wait for the wind to die down, and get the next plot covered .
