Great looking plants johndoe, hope your season goes well. Also great for me as a novice to see so many videos on the NDS Facebook page , I am learning loads this year!!
I have a question regarding one of my dahlia s , I have a Kenora Challenger which is currently opening up and the petals have a lavender hue around parts of them , is this normal, I was expecting just pure white but it seems to be more of a creamy white with the lavender hints. Could anyone who has grown it advise me please.
Thanks
Johnjess

I agree Willow it is a beautiful flower, certainly the best looking dahlia I have ever managed to grow!! For the past few mornings when I have opened the curtain it seems to have grown each day. Here it is from this mornings viewing, Unfortunately I only have two flowers at the moment but several buds trying to open on all my other dahlias. Can't wait to see how they do. PS Uploading photos now much easier, thanks Garden Friends. johnjess

Hi JJ, don't worry about the slight lavender blush, that'll disappear as the bloom fully opens. Looks like you are doing a great job mate. All the best at your shows.
Just thought I'd add a bit of colour from some blooms I'm doing for a friends wedding this weekend.

Thanks Willow, I can only claim a bit of beginners luck, a good plant from H of H and a huge amount of good advice from the guys on this board, and I also tried to pick up what I can from the NDS Facebook page for my flowers. I have never had a dahlia of mine look as good as this before so a big thank you to everyone on here who has passed on advice. If the rest turn out half as good as the current flowers I have I'll be delighted.
Also congratulations to Cat and Che on your success at the Cornwall show. I hope you have a large cabinet for all the trophies and tickets!!!

Also, you can try and remove the two side buds once the terminal bud starts to show, as I can see from your picture they have been left on. Doing this will give you a much better flower as the plant sends all its efforts into the one bud. The stems look a bit bendy, don't know if your feeding them or not. If not, give them a good feed with tomerite every fortnight, and that'll perk them up no end. If your still worried about bugs, start a spraying routine, once a fortnight should do it. Provardo is a good one to start with.
Good luck for the rest of the summer.

Many thanks johnjess it was quite tiring friday and saturday I must admit. Che obviously wants to do everything himself and quite rightly so but it does mean that everything takes that bit longer and needs to be organised well in advance so he knows what he is doing on the day (he chooses everything) He also uses a felco knife etc to cut stems so I have to watch like a hawk! I let him do this so that he understands the way to be sensible and not injure himself, how to respect what they can do and what he shouldn't do, so hopefully he won't feel the need to show off because it is commonplace for him. He entered cookery and sewing as well as the flower classes so he was busy baking and finishing things friday all day, but boy was it worth it in the end. His face made it all worth while. The pictures have apparently been sent to the local rag so he may be in there this week or next which he will love. The show is not judged the same as our Cornwall Dahlia Society NDS affiliated shows but if they help to keep Che keen and help to keep him going until the end of the month then that's great. After all he must have done something right to be chosen over the other entries Today we spent several hours disbudding and securing buds. We also gave everything except kiwis a feed. We will have to address an earwig rise that has started to munch some plants but having picked 93 slugs off the lawn the other morning at least they shouldn't be an issues for a few days!! lol johndoe I hope the wedding flowers went well for you, I liked the combination of blooms you shared

Absolutely chuffed for the 'Little Champ'. And for you Cat, all the hard work you and the OH have put in are there for all to see . Look forward to shaking his hand, and yours on a job magnificently done, at Wisley next month. Keep up the great work.
