I've seen your stunning displays on Facebook again this year esther - gorgeous, you must spend hours dead-heading & watering every day!

Here's a couple of mine hanging from the arbour & a 'living picture' on the fence down by the pond. I don't do colour schemes or themes I just put whatever I've got in although most do have lobelia because I love the colour & 'frothiness' that gives & usually a permanent evergreen element such as ivy or mini conifer etc.I keep my baskets & tubs going all year round by changing the planting. I keep pelargoniums, fuchsias, begonias etc. in the greenhouse over winter & use them again the next summer with a few new additions & put spring bulbs in each year under the plants. uploading a image

Hi,I hope I'm asking this in the right thread!!
I'm looking to have a couple of hanging baskets of fuchsias next summer. I've never done hanging baskets before so I have a couple of beginners questions,
are there specific hanging basket fuchsias? And how many plants do you need to fill a basket?
Sorry for the very basic questions but going by the pictures you guys know what you are doing so it looks like a good place to ask!!
Thanks
johnjess

Hi johnjess, hopefully esther will look in & see your question as she really is an expert on hanging baskets etc. & has some fantastic award winning displays. I can only offer general advice in that the number of plants per basket does depend on the size of your basket & variety of fuchsia you use. There are lots of fuchsias suitable for baskets & there are some 'trailing' types specifically bred for baskets nowadays. I tend to use the 'giant' types like 'Voodoo' & 'Snowburner' & mix them in with other plants but the smaller flowered varieties like those in esther's photo look great on their own. Eli has a fantastic collection of fuchsias & would probably be able to advise you but he hasn't been online for a while, hope he sees this if he does.

Sorry I haven't been on much this year. Things have been difficult ...
Some Fuchsias have an upright growth habit and some have a pendulous growth habit. The pendulous ones would be best for a hanging basket. When you buy them it usually states the growth type on the label.
As for the number of plants you need, it depends on the size of the basket, and the size of your wallet because you have to pay for them. I like to buy one of each type and take cuttings to increase them but others treat them as annuals, throwing them away and buy new ones every year.

If you start early johnjess you could increase your stocks.Fuchsia are quite easy to propagate. I've used Marinka, happy wedding day, dark eyes, annabelle, pink marshmellow etc. We did miss you being here Eli, Btw, the cutting you sent me all rooted

Thank you all for taking the time to reply. I'll have to have a trip to the garden centre to look for fuchsias suitable for hanging baskets in the spring , or are there online specialists like Halls of Heddon do for dahlias ? My baskets are around 12 inches diameter so would it be 2-3 plants per basket? Sorry more questions!!!
Thanks again
Johnjess

'Swingtime' is another good large trailer I've often used too johnjess. I tend to buy my fuchsias from different places so don't know of any specialists but I did come across this website for fuchsia plug plants which looks good & reasonably priced. I'd go for more like 5 plants per basket but maybe that's just me, you could use 3 if they fill out nicely. Fuchsia plug plants
