Hi there folks,
My parents have a pestimon plant in a pot. It flowers every year. Except last year (e.g. 2017). It produced lots of foliage, and seemed generally happy.... but no flowers.
Any thoughts as to why not ?

Any thoughts as to why not ? I think they might be overcrowded roofy, mine behave the same in the garden and I just throw them out as they dont look healthy anyway. You could break them up repot in several pots and see how they go this year .

Penstemons do tend to be less floliferous as time goes by.....I think they are at their best in their second and third year Take cuttings in spring or summer

roofgardener Your penstemon is obviously a ‘pest’ as it did not flower, so your spelling was right. You don’t have room for plants which are not pulling their weight. Penstemons are pretty when they are behaving.

Weeeeelll.... it's my Parents garden in this particular case, and they have a fair amount of space. HOWEVER.... there are limits.
On closer inspection, there are a LOT of dead, brown stalks in the pot. And it IS rather crowded.
We're going to attempt to split it between two pots, to see if that helps. I'm not sure how you split a penstemon.... it rather looks as though all the stalks go into a common stalk underground... sooo...... any advice ?

That's VERY helpful grindle. I shall be speaking with my Mum about this later thismorning.

You dont "split" penstemons..... Cuttings are quick and the very best way to increase your stock roof gardener.

Hmmm.... thing is.... she doesn't really WANT to propagate it (unless there is no choice).
Perhaps I should just prune it ?

You can prune it hard back...not yet but in a month or so. Trouble is it is likely not to flower as well as it used to. How about cutting it hard back and use the cuttings ?

I took 12 cuttings from my Penstemon last year, very easy to do, and all were very successful.
