We have a plastic 'pond' that is faced with wooden slats, on our patio. When we re-lay the patio area to lawn and borders, we will be putting in an unproductive area in the corner of the garden, down to ground level.
In 2008, it was just water with gravel, and some native water plants. Since then, it has been home to frogs and all sorts. It'll be interesting to see how the wildlife take to it down at ground level.

I don't think I entirely follow you chrism ? Are you saying that the pond will be moved from the (current) patio, down into the "unproductive" area ?

I take it that's what chrism means roofgardener, I'm sure the wildlife will love it at ground level & will all relocate there safely. We had a tiny raised pond in a raised bed at our old garden & it always had frogs etc. in it, they must have clambered/jumped in over pots around it etc. & now we have a small pond at ground level at the end of the garden here & the local frogs found it very quickly.

That's exactly it, SueA. By sinking it into the soil to ground level, it's bound to be even more attractive to wildlife. The unproductive area it will go into is close to an elder tree and too shady for any plants we have tried. We even tried woodland flowers and only a small handful of bluebells made it.
