I'm losing a few cuttings at the moment. Some to what I think is called 'blackleg , black stems below the soil level . It's happened since the hot spell we had recently and that is roughly when these cuttings were taken. Can anyone advise what is causing the problem? My early cuttings success percentages were looking quite good but since the hot spell they are dropping quickly !!

Just came across this thread , very interesting. roofgardener what did you end up doing? Just though I would say that growing Dahlias from seed is so easy . I grow new ones every year and for me personally I prefer doing this than storing the tubers.

Hi guys, I have got all my plants planted out now and have some left which I am going to have a go at making pot tubers with but not 100 percent sure how to go about it. Any advice anyone can give would be welcome. The plants are in 3 inch square pots at the moment.
I hope planting out has gone well for everyone. Good luck all.

Johnjess Hi Johnjess Just leave the plants in those 3" pots. Water and feed as you would normally over the summer months. At the end of the season dry off and store frost free. Hopefully you will have some nice chunky tubers to propagate next year. Good Luck !!

Thanks for the reply Lou78W, do I need to put the pots into soil or can I just put them on a seed tray and store them there?
Thanks

Hi , in the short time that I have been growing dahlias I have been using Miracle grow liquid fertiliser for the early feeds then Tomorite later on. I'm thinking of giving Chempak a go this year. Good idea or stick with my usual routine?

Does no harm to have a change. I like Chempak or Vitax as an alternative to Tomorite

Managed to come second in the twelve giant decoratives at the National Dahlia Society show held at Wisley this week. This has been the first year I've concentrated on giants so was totally chuffed to get placed pitted against a very strong entry.
This is my 12.
This is the winning 12 by Tony Kingdon, stunning!!
All the entries just after judging. What a lovely site.

Didn't you do well johndoe. Congratulations on your success; you must be very proud of yourself. I'm going to Harrogate Flower Show next weekend and am looking forward to seeing all the dahlias. Its been a good few years since I've been.

Fantastic blooms johndoe! Many congratulations. How does growing Giants compare to growing for other classes? Next stop Harrogate?

Yesterday the wife noticed three Dahlia's have started to shoot first week in Sept. In our area of Aust Vic on the south coast our planting time is the first or second week in Nov. Crazy weather.
