Did you see my black Hellebore? Yes, really! Ophiopogon planiscapus 'Nigrescens' springs to mind, too.

Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Tom Thumb' for foliage and of course there are a couple of black flowered Viola's too.
Black Tulips?...will have to wait until autumn now for their bulbs though. Is there a near black bearded Iris?

I think you can be overwhelmed Geranium. Grindle knows a huge amount, especially about unusual plants. However, I really like this kind of honesty.

Dahlia Twynings After Eight height 75cm spread 45cm That dahlia would be superb in a black border because the very pale flower would show the leaves off very nicely. Without some other colour, I think black would not be very interesting.

If you want a taller plant for late summer Eupatorium rugosum 'Chocolate' is good, purple foliage and fluffy white flowers late Sept/Oct.
