On the new leaves of my Rose Zephirine Drouhin there is are tiny, skinny, caterpillars which are eating around the underside edges. They are 5 to 7 mm long and really skinny. I have never seen these before. I can’t find them on Google.

They're rose sawfly larvae Cherry, I get them a lot but not so many this year as the bluetits & sparrows have been picking them off & eating them. They just defoliate the roses but it doesn't do any lasting damage & is only cosmetic. If I spot 'skeleton' leaves I just pick those off & check the undersides of the leaves next to them, they seem to start on the leaves at the tips of stems & if you pick them off that's usually the end of the problem.

Thank you SueA and I can see that Lou78W agreed with you. steve was enjoying his beautiful garden too much to do anything but make a joke. Ha ha Steve! They are skinny caterpillars, not skinny roses.

I was reading about the caterpillars in a garden very close to mine in Picnic Bay, Magnetic Island, and the owner could hear them munching from 3m away. He had 12 and they are hatching into beautiful Cairns Birdwing butterflies. I told him I was worried about my skinny, tiny rose sawfly caterpillars. If you have time, SueA, it is Maggie Island Gardeners on Facebook.

I'll have a look for that Cherry, I can hear the slugs & snails munching on my plants when I have the patio doors open here at night!
