At the end of last season I dug out a few Dahlias and stored them in a tray of damp Peat Moss indoors no light. I have noticed a few new shoots and all look and feel very healthy none dried out. Then there is only that has a 20cm long thin stem like a knitting needle.
We normally plant Dahlias 1st or 2nd week in Nov. I have also noticed a few are shooting in the garden already (which is very unusual) We have had a colder winter than normal and severa warm spring days already 19c today.
Questions
1. Do I start planting all the dahlias now?
2 The Dahlia that has the 20cm shoot do I cut that off at the bulb or plant it as normal?
3 Feeding, the area before planting or after planting around the bulbs?

I think I would plant them now, Kieth but cut the long stem down. Rake fertiliser in the ground before planting.

Thank You
That is what I was thinking I will dig in a little Moo Poo and Tomato Fert first then start planting all the Dahlias. The Dahlias that are in the ground many a shooting already I will apply the Moo Poo and fert around the new growth and lightly dig in.

Keith As Derek says, get them planted out and cut back early growth. But I would use a high nitrogen feed instead of tomato feed which is high in potash, at this early part of their growth. The high nitrogen feed will help root stimulation and green growth. Just a couple of feeds will do at this early stage. High potash feeds are good for stem strength and bloom colour.

Once plant out I allow them a couple of weeks to find their feet, then feed for the first time. Give it another couple of weeks and feed again. I use Chempak 2 nitrogen feed, diluted, 200g to 200 litres of water, with each plant getting about 5 litres.
