just curious. When seed sowing-do you sieve all compost-do you fill seed tray then just sieve enough compost to cover seeds. what size sieve do you use? When wetting compost for seed sowing-do you water from above or do you stand seed tray in water till compost wet. or do you water after sowing and covering seed. do you just bung everything in and hope for best?

Evening, Personally, I sieve the top 1/3 of the tray, tamp down the compost, and dependent upon the seed, cover with sieved compost and vermiculite - or just vermiculite. The sieve I use has about 7mm square holes. As for watering, always water from below, by standing the tray in water. If you water from above you risk washing all of your carefully sown seeds to the edge of the tray

I don't sieve because I am lazy, so I just use vermiculite to cover, but if the seeds are big I will cover finely with a smidge of the finest of the compost with no lumps. I water from the bottom, but yesterday I got impatient and top watered as well from the fine rose on the houseplant watering can. I feel a little ashamed of top watering, but I was in a rush as I was defrosting the freezer as well and needed the sink. I was even doing more. Serious multi-tasking you see.

I don't sieve the compost unless it's for covering seeds and i always soak the compost from the bottom. I use an old kitchen sieve or another pot if i can't find it

I only sieve the compost for seeds if it seems 'lumpy'. I normally use vermiculite to cover seeds, and water from the bottom.
