Hello all. I live in a row of 4 town houses , and we have a small grass slope which runs the entire row. I used to cut it but we now pay a gardener to do the whole lot and I’m a space of 12 month it’s now looks ruined. I admit being a new build the grass and also the substrate below will be poor. The entire area is now full of weeds and very little grass and looks awful. It is a pin to cut as it’s a slope but what can we do to get this looking better ? The picture shows a small section from my kitchen window but the entire front looks like this . Is weed and feed the answer ? A lawn fertiliser perhaps. I know very little about lawns hence why the back garden is pretend grass haha I do like flowers and plants but cutting a lawn every weekend is not my bag. Any advice would be very much appreciated Thank you

It does look rather weed infested so a lot depends on what tools you have available eg Garden fork, Watering can (preferably one solely for use with weedkiller) I would use something like Verdone or Verdone extra to kill the weeds without harming the grass. Alternatively a Weed and Feed which would do. Use garden fork to punch holes in the turf several inches deep at regular intervals, say 12" apart to aerate and then sow some fresh grass seed. Grass maintenance can be as much or as little as you are up to doing with the results commensurate with the effort so basically it is up to you. There is lots of advice on the internet and of course a copy of Dr Hessayons book on lawns would be useful for ready reference. Good luck

I shall get myself some weed and feed as you suggest . I shall also have a go at aerating and adding some new seed. Do you think I should tell the gardener to lay off cutting the grass for a little while. Not there is any grass there haha

After applying any weedkiller go by the advice on the package of whatever you use as they can vary somewhat and with new seed sowing don't cut for a few weeks to let it establish.

I managed to get hold of some weed and feed. Applied just the other day as per instructions. It’s been very dry here so I’ve been watering the grass to keep it moist. It has started to turn very dark , black in some areas which i guess is the moss and weeds beginning to die off. Instructions say take over after 2 weeks. Some areas are literally just soil with no grass so I also have some grass seed ready for when I’ve raked over. Hoping it all picks back up. What sort of time are we looking at for it to start and grow back ? I think we may stop the guy cutting the grass altogether for a while and I may even just start to do it again myself. Do a better job than this guy.

I did weed n' feed on my lawn last year. It had a LOT of moss and stuff, to the extent that when they all died back, the garden looked like the Somme !
Still, it has recovered this year.
