I always put my tools away at night. I am sure this helps the wooden shaft and handle. However, I do use an old RAF fork for poking the hose through for watering. This has lasted for many years, but I do have another now.

I do wish Millman would come back and tell us what he decided.

I had a look in wilkos spade looked good-Picked it up thought blade was loose on shaft checked a couple more found them to be same so put me off. So after looking round -I ended up getting a Burgon and Ball stainless steel border spade.Made me grin like a cheshire cat(where does that saying come from) ;D Suprising how small things make us happy

I answered this in the same vein as Grindle and forgot to press 'post reply'. Silly me. I am pleased you are now sorted and hope you get years out of your new spade. I can understand why you were grinning because I love my spade.

I'll have to have a look at that one millman. I have a pair of Burgon and Ball hand shears, I'm completely in love with them.

Ours are very old. One of them was rescued from a skip at my OH's old place of work about 30 years ago and it's still solid, the other is a 'lady's' spade purchased from B&Q about 10 years ago. Both live in the GH along with the hoe and my hand tools. I rarely clean them but I do rub a bit of linseed oil into the wood in the autumn.
