Dont know if this in right place. Bought about 18month ago a traditional range spade-while digging out a laurel bush the blade snapped-and on the join you could see the rust.As it wasnt cheap was slightly miffed to say the least So got to have a new one-as it is mainly used for digging up shrubs, planting etc going to try a border spade. My soil is very sandy and last house on estate.Think builders used it to dump rubble. So want a strong spade? can anybody recommend one?

I looked at stainless steel border spades and forks with wooden handles in Wilkinson's yesterday and could hardly believe the quality for £12.00. They were beautiful tools and the border spade even had shoulders for the feet. I did not look at the bigger spades, but Wilkinson's would definitely be worth a look.

I've never managed to keep a spade for more than two years, I'm a little hard on my tools. We have a Wilkinson opening near us soon, I'll have to try their spades.

I bought a Wilkinson sword stainless steel spade about 8 years ago - it was a great investment, and suits me down to the ground. ;D ;D

I welded a new 'heavy' one onto it with a solid steel handle which makes it heavy, it would suit WF . I use an ordinary Bulldog for general use. WF, I also have a builder's trench spade, VERY strong.

I've got the Spear & Jackson stainless steel border spade, but I've only had it since last year so I don't know how it will last.

That sounds good, I'm good at snapping handles, I wouldn't mind the weight if it was strong. I've tried them all from budget to stupidly expensive.

The new generation of Wilkinson spades has a wooden shaft and handle and I was really impressed. However, I won a Spear & Jackson Border Spade in a radio gardening competition. This has a long guarantee, so I use this just now.

I am very good at breaking tools especially spades as I tend to expect too much from them. I still have and use a spade bought from Homebase about 30 years ago for a birthday present. Admittedly the handle broke but I fixed it with a jubilee clip and its still going strong..

I had both the spade and fork with nice wooden handles, they both broke so now I've gone for the metal shaft, the S&J have 10yr guarantee, although my friend borrowed my new fork and managed to bend one of the tines

I think maybe what you're paying for is not the handles but the quality of the steel but some of you Ladies seem to have a lot of 'umph' in your arms! I find that once a tine is bent and straightened it never regains it's strength. I have a large stainless fork but most of the time I use a 'Lady' fork. These are my tough spades......
