I am clearing two borders currently filled with bushes. I would like to put flowers in the borders that flower throughout the year and would welcome advice on how I may do that starting work now.

I don't think there is any one flowering plant which will flower all year but if you plant a mixture of perennials, bulbs & shrubs etc. you can get colour for most of the year. If you like roses you could put containerised ones in now or bare root ones in during the winter & they flower here from about April to November, you can plant spring bulbs next month which will come up & give you colour from early next year if you choose crocus, daffs, tulips etc. & penstemons, rudbeckias, asters etc. will give you colour now & for the next few months & you can grow wallflowers from seed or buy clumps to plant in the next few months which will look great next spring.
