That scape you see on your Orchid is indeed a new flower stem! In a few months it will open up into many lovely flowers that last a long time! Be warned though - the scape is quite fragile - I accidentally broke it off on 2 plants trying to straighten them up so they wouldn't hang over the sides of the pot! If you can find an old stick with the clips that come with Orchids when you buy them it's the best way to hold them up securely without damaging the scape. I did that with a couple I have.

Thank you balc2 My Clivia has died back by about a half since last year, and I repoted it about 3 years ago, into a bigger pot, so maybe that's why the flowers are not so good.
Re the orchid, it is tied on to a stick that came with it when it was bought. I've put it out of the way so that I don't knock it accidentally.

Eli Perhaps that might be the reason & they need another year to fill the pots with their roots. My Clivias are doing very well - much better than I had hoped for a couple of months ago!
About the Orchid. It's good that you have tied it up but you need to keep a close eye on it if you want it to grow vertically. I did that last year with a couple of mine & was able to get the stems to grow straight! But I had to loosen the ties & move them up the scape several times to keep them vertical. Your post reminded me to have a look at the 4 plants I have in our small kitchen window & guess what - yes, there was the start of the first scape this year!

Today I finally saw our Crocuses wide open in the sunshine on the balcony railings! Up till now they had not opened wide so I got a couple of photos of them open! As they are still on the phone I can't show them before tomorrow.

I now have Crocuses in 2 shades of yellow open on the balcony railings! In the first photo you can see one of the dark yellow/orange with dark stripes in the background. I don't think there are more of these left to open but the pale yellow ones probably have some more to come yet. There are lots more Crocuses with just their tips sticking out of the compost but will probably flower in the coming week or two.
These Crocuses that are in a bowl are dark purple with white stripes. I expect them to open in a couple of weeks as well. All together in the bowl they make a wonderful display!
