I've recently read an article on Square Foot gardening & I thought it might be an interesting subject to talk about & perhaps to learn from. This isn't the first time I've read similar articles but I thought I might post it on the gardening forums of which I'm a member & so we can share ideas about it & perhaps pique the curiosity of new gardeners while we are at it & encourage them to give it a go as a way of getting started growing things, not just veg, but herbs & flowers as well.

That link has nothing to do with gardening.

I did square foot gardening for veg. years & years ago in our old garden balc2. It's great if you only have a tiny garden or just want to try growing a few veg to see how you go on. I built a small raised bed out of some decking boards, I think it was 4ftx4ft, filled it with compost, divided it into 1ft squares with string & then planted just a few plants or sowed seeds of different crops in each square. You just have to remember not to plant things which will grow too big next to others which would get shaded out. I seem to remember growing onions, shallots, carrots, lettuce, chard etc., You can put sticks in each corner to drape fleece or netting over as well for protection if you need it.

I've not tried it as I don't have any spare ground for it, but I think it's a good concept for small gardens, or someone wanting to try their hand at veg gardening

That link has nothing to do with gardening. The link works perfectly well & is about the method of growing plants in small places. So how you can say that I don't know.

Interesting to read, and I noted they advise a compost mixed from their own 'recipe'. I've got a raised bed which is a few feet long and wide, and grow vegetables in it, however it has some soil and some multi-purpose compost mixed together.
I've never divided it into one foot squares but I do grow things in short rows. I get varying results. This year I've got some nice lettuces but everything else failed, so by next year I'm going to add some growmore or something to it.
Maybe I'll try dividing part of it into squares just as an experimant but I think some things would not grow well like that. They'd be bunched together in the square, and things like parsnips and turnips need more room.

Eli, good to know that you are growing some of your own vegetables! 👍It's probably a case of experimenting to see what works best for you.

Growing plants IS gardening no matter how you grow them, except as agriculture. In your opinion then growing houseplants isn't gardening either? 🤔

It is good to have differing opinions. This reminds me of old times on here.
