I disturbed loads of ants in the crack between the house and paving on the west side and lifted pots with dead Nerines owing to the hard winter. I thought they didn't sting. These little black ants, just like the ones I know as sugar ants in Australia, got very cross and all ran for me. They sped up my boots and even found their way down my top. Every ant stung me. I cannot go round that side of the house until I wash them away.

Cherry, did you know that if you draw a chalk line the ants wont cross it?
Apparently they do not like chalk. I have yet to test it out but I'm sure I read it somewhere.

Ant powder  . We used to get them in our old house (yes i mean inside!) they had a nest by the concrete path and vent. Little buggers used to get every were. Ive seen lots here but not around the house (touch wood). (I do have one very large Ant making a mess in the dining room :  |

Common Chalk
According to Reader's Digest, you can keep ants away by drawing a line of chalk around the entry areas to your house. Look for chalk that contains calcium carbonate, which comes from ground-up marine animal shells. The calcium carbonate is a natural ant repellent. Use powdered chalk and sprinkle it in your garden and flower beds to keep the ants from coming into your house.
