What is even more wasteful is the fact that many councils purchase vast amounts of these bulbs to plant up parks, roundabouts etc to give a beautiful display and at the end of the season the bulbs are dug out and thrown into landfill. Our council does this but they do give access to the general public to help themselves to as many bulbs as they want beforehand but still many are discarded.
At least the growers are doing it for a reason - to bulk up the bulbs to get them to a good size to ensure good flowering. The growers have been doing this for many years and it is how the Spalding tulip festival came into being using up the flower heads to decorate the floats.

What bugs me is the council up here put on lovely displays of primroses, tulips, begonia's etc etc every year, when the flowers go over these perennial plants are all binned . If your lucky enough to be there when they are being dismantled you can usually take as many as you want. The tulip fields did look spectacular though, but very wasteful too.

No No. These are your next year's bulbs. The flowers are just fleeting and are already past their best.

I understood that but surely they could have been picked and given out to worthy causes, rather than left to be wasted ?

That takes time and money to pick and distribute. We pick daffodils from growers like that for the Church. They are sold around the village, but they are grown for the bulbs. If they have reached open flowering, it is too late to pick.
