I was googling a Clematis this evening when suddenly I gat an 'alert' from Windows saying I was 'infected' by Trojans and stuff. Suspicious, I tried to close/delete it but it wouldn't go away. I shut the pc down and rad a check. no problems. Lucky I didn't do as the so called windows box asked.

Yes looks like you did right Merlin, some crafty virus progs actually ask you to download a prog to get rid of them ...but you will be downloading the virus

A computer nerd I know says that it's a scam to get me to dowmload their anti-virus software.

There is one similar that Steve Hopkins had, that tries to get you to buy software but just wants your bank details

That's expensive and extremely annoying G, it's not as if they get anything from it. Their minds are far from normal.
We recieved one once before when Pen fell for it so we now always refer to our security first.

I had one a while back, I know better than to click on either the yes or no button and always shut them down by the red cross. This one activated when I clicked the red cross, I've never moved so fast, that power cable came out double quick, luckily before it had done any damage.
