I use the hosepipe carefully in the greenhouses at the moment - I don't think I could manage all those cans of water yet

I believe that it's wise to not water generally at this time so that roots will travel down to find moisture, this will give long term security throughout Summer. Obviously anything newly planted will need it along with potted stuff. However earlier this week I watered all over and well, the reason is that my 18" of soil sits on a solid layer of clay. At dawn this morning I went to feed 'the Girls' and the perfume in the air was wonderful.

An 'ominous' example of 'global warming' is that Londoners are already drinking desalinated sea water !!

My plants were dying in front of me - so I'm watering the whole garden bit by bit. It takes a long time to get round it all. I don't ever water the lawns, though. They soon recover even after a shower of rain.

It's as bad up here, there was a few heavy showers over at Dufftown last weekend but nothing here. The ploughed fields are dusty and when it's windy all the top soil is blowing away, you can see it piled up at the side of the roads.

The only plants that get watered in my garden are the ones in containers and in the g'house. Eveything else has to make do with what nature provides. If you constantly water things then their roots will remain nearer the surface whereas they will normally send down their roots in search of water. Thus you are making a rod for your own back by constantly watering. Back in the '70s when we had a long drought my sweetpeas were really suffering so I decided to water them. I put in over 50 2 gallon cans and it made not the slightest difference. When the rain came they were back on top form within a few days. It is better to mulch and so preserve the moisture already in the soil, even a dust mulch after hoing in the veg patch stops water evaporating away. mind you if you are masochistically inclined or need the exercise feel free to run up and down lugging cans of water. ;D

Well - there's something coming down from the sky here! Not a lot, admittedly, but the sun has gone and people's washing got taken in.
