had a lovely day out today. naturally I bought plants, 15 in total ranging from £2.50 up to £7.50. But why oh why do some growers tell fibs? I garden on chalk and always ask about the suitability of a plant if I dont know it. Well 2 different nurserymen have sold me plants that on research at home says acidic to neutral. Namely Haberlea and Lithophragma. I dont particularly want to dig in compost etc to cosset them.

yes they are but how they will cope in my alkaline soil and the constant change in pH ony time will tell. It's just not fair. one grower said a plant I was looking at was not suitable and he wouldnt sell me it as it would fail in a few months . appreciated his honesty.

I'm always completely honest with my customers at work too. There is nearly always an alternative and they appreciate that for certain.
I wonder of those that give erroneous info at shows do it just to get the sale? probably! Luckily, I suspect that most people into plants are good people at heart and those rogues are relatively far and few between.

one would hope so Steve, but when I describe my garden aspect and the fact that I have bedrock chalk 10" under the soil I dont see how a plant the rhs says requires acid to neutral soil can be sold as suitable. Surely if you are a dedicated nursery and grow a plant to sell you should know about it. In gc the staff are often not plants people just employees with the odd knowledgeable [not that you are odd ] staff memeber, but at a plant fair. it just makes me so cross.

I don't blame you, Seaburn. I'd be annoyed, too.
Do you know which Nurseries they were? I'm glad you enjoyed your day out, even if that part was a disappointment.
