I have seen a bird this morning at Blackleach that I have never seen before-a red crested pochard.A keen bird watcher who comes regularly reported it to Richard (the ranger)yesterday. He confirmed this morning that it was still there so I went to have a look.I had a good view of it as it wasnt moving ,just sat there among a lot of coot.It has a red beak and a redder head and back than an orinary pochard.

Great pictures Derek. It must be exciting to see something new. I have never heard of a Red Crested Pochard.

As you know we had common terns nesting on the raft at Blackleach last year and naturally we are hoping they will come back. One was seen today hovering around, presumably looking for a mate. There were two lesser black backed gulls on the raft and they wouldn't let the tern near it.Lets hope another one comes soon.Perhaps two of them will get rid of the gulls.

At present we have 9 different wild flowers flowering at Blackleach country park. The same week last year there were 23 and the year before 24 which shows how late things are this year.

It does Sweetpea, finally flowers are beginning to bloom, but the hawthorns etc are still not showing signs of coming to life. You can see the buds but they ain't opening.
