I've just come back from The Alnwick Garden, where I've been to listen to a talk from Adrian Bloom from Blooms of Bressingham. His talk was about perennials and grasses and their combination, for year round interest. You will all remember his father Alan; the gent with the long white hair and an enormous interest in steam trains as well as gardening. Adrian sold the Blooms of Bressingham nursery a few years ago, and now manages "Foggy Bottom" the family garden at Bressingham. He lectures in the USA quite a bit too He gave a very interesting talk and had to cope with rain thundering on the roof. His latest book is Bloom's Best Perennials and Grasses...which I purchased and he signed...I've only had a brief look through as yet but there are some beautiful pictures to drool over ;D He told us they had suffered greatly with the dry weather and is having to irrigate so as not to lose plants.

I went to "Foggy Bottom" and the Blooms of Bressingham nursery a few years ago and really enjoyed it. My Euphorbia "Fireglow" came from there.

I have told you about the drought here Lou. Now you might believe me. He claims that his father started island beds too. Did he bring you any cheap plants? I have two really good pots from there, in the absence of special daphnes which I really thought he would have.

I can do a 'one-up-manship' here. We took our two to Bressingham when they were children, so that must be about 35 years ago (!) and we met Alan Bloom himself! He was, of course, driving the steam train. I loved the garden. I can't remember there being much of a Nursery there at that time, though. Now you see the 'Blooms of Bressingham' label at most GCs, don't you. A real industry!
