I had another look this morning, Steve and Grindle are right. I thought it was odd that there were no seed leaves but I was still convinced they must be Acer seedlings because that is what I sowed.

This makes me want to plant my cone seeds. I must have a look and see if they are ripening. I don't know when this takes place, or anything about them.

I found these when they were closed, put them in the conservatory to let them dry out and the seeds fell out as they opened.
I presume the seeds will be ripe when the cones turn brown.
