There were only three entries, which sort of takes the fun out of it. This is where I exhibited the sweet peas and it was a large class. At that time I was third behind two nationals and mine looked like theirs. I got a national exhibitor to set them up in the vase as I couldn't do this. One of these people has moved just too far, and the other has retired from showing. It was still a big class, but the quality was not as good as in previous years. I had a good look at the vases of four flowers for future years.

I did some more de-budding and Vaselining today. I have loads of buds on all my plants now. One plant has a flower beginning to open, it is going to be stunning.

I just hope we have got the timing right and you have plenty of blooms to pick from on the day. When i first viewed Ruskin Respectable at the Leeds Dahlia Trials in 2009, it had been pouring with rain, the blooms of this variety seems to stand the weather without marking up.

Here is my first flower, I think it is stunning I have loads of buds coming along. I want to have a practice with my early flowers, you said something about pricking the stem so the petals don't drop. I remember picking a vase of my single dahlias and within hours the petals started dropping.

WF. when i cut mine for shows, i stick a pointed knife into the stem below the water level and gently twist it to release the air lock in the stem. Once i stage at the show the blooms are placed in oasis and then it is possible for petals to start dropping anytime, you just hope it will not happen until after judging.
The bloom will be even better by Sunday the back petals will have dressed back to the stem also you should find the centre of the bloom spot on then. another pic is ordered for Sunday. ;D

When I picked mine, I worried about the stem being hollow for a little way and made sure it was filled with water before putting it in a vase. The flowers stay looking good for so long, I don't know when they should be picked for showing, so I hope to learn this. That is stunning, just as you said WF.

Are those two little little marks i can see on the bloom, one near the centre and one on the far right, if you spot a mark on a petal 24 hours before a show remove it. The space created by removing the petals will have closed up by show time.
