My mum bought this lovely Rhododendron 'Blue Peter' on one of those lime tolerant rootstocks the other day. Smashing plant I think you'll agree! It will be interesting to see how it does.

I didn't know there was such a plant SteveN, I'll be interested to know how it does. I assume your Mum's soil is chalky

Heavy clay and neutral. These rootstocks were developed from a single wild Rhododendron growing in a limestone quarry in Germany. It means that anyone can now grow them, even on alkaline soils.

It is beautiful SteveN. They are well tested now and it should be great for her, however, your soil should be neutral where you are shouldn't it?

She has had Rhodo's over the years but they gradually decline due to the soil.

I had one a couple of years ago, SteveN, as my soil is neutral. It flowered, then a few weeks later, turned up its toes. I had the receipt and label, so I complained to the GC. They weren't very nice about it - they tried to say it must have been vine weevil. I insisted, as there was a notice up to guarantee plants. Eventually, I was graciously allowed to choose 'plants to the value'. I was disappointed, though - I liked my rhododendron! I don't feel I want to try again at the moment.

Indeed, I think it is neutral though generally heavy clay which apparently these inkarho root stocks are able to grow in. Mums was of course planted with plenty of compost worked into the area

A fantastic breakthrough, I heard about only last week, could have been from Chelsea or on GQT. These specialists never give up do they. One day someone will breed a rose that's totally resistant to BB, flowers all season, Gentian blue and a knock-out perfume.
