I would not normally post here in regards to show achievements but as Ive been asked - at the Main County show I collected Best Small Cactus in Show (set of Trelyn Kiwi) but on this occassion just missed out for Best Vase In Show which was won by a cracking vase of Barbarry Pip. Graham Carey chose my Trelyns as Best but the other 2 judges chose the Barbarry.

Been looking at my brenda t tel and it looks like I may be going to have the same problem as you, got one about three quarters back but not a lot left in the centre. This is interesting because I have been looking to grow more small decs as the Dianes do not do it down here in Cornwall for any of us (too dampy), and I have been in contact with both Dave Gillam and Ian Sutherland. Dave suggested Brenda T, and I replied how Ive been told by local growers that she doesnt dress back on the stem before centre gone. Dave replied that small decs do not have to dress back and its just that we are used to the dressing back because the Dianes do it. So there we go! Dave suggested Marion Storer but I have heard mixed feelings about the stock of this one, and I do not see her at any of the shows. Ian suggested Rossendale Peach and Leopold Chloe. Now I have seen photos of Peach and only today a County grower says this is a good dahlia and weather hardy (although I will put her under cover). I grow and show Scaur Sunset in the main which is a good workhorse dahlia but not the refinement I want (also have one Ruby but its a bit chunky petalled, and another grower from Devon gave me a couple tubers his seedling which I am growing and its not bad, good stems, but a little light in petal to me). Any thoughts then folks? Regards, Paul[/quote I have leopold chloe in too paul and joan walker, first year i've grown chloe,it's just starting to flower it's an early flowerer so I double stopped It and left 7 on will let you know how it does and if it's any good will be able to sort you out with some of that too I am good friends with the raiser phil watson.I've grown joan walker for 3 years now and like it a lot all profit from the sale of it went to our society,it does'nt damp as easy as the dianes the only problem with it is getting 5 the same size, 3 is easy but 5 can sometimes be a different matter.I won the small dec class at a local agricultural show last year with it.Phil realesed it for a friend of his so I will be able to get you that too.I stopped growing the dianes this year because I couldnt get them on the bench because of damping.

I agree Spanish Dancer is a little cracker....and yes Pirate is more refined. I'm looking forward to Buccaneer flowering though.....I notice Halls have Buccaneer on their list this year.....and a " Carol's Spanish Dancer"......red and white..........I can see all my promises to myself of "not buying anything new this year" are blowing out the window already I know what you mean about Miss.....but like you, not impressed with her form Lou that's a coincidence you mentioning Carols Spanish Dancer. I was talking to the raiser on Sat at the local show, he was asking me what was the best time to arrive at Harrogate to do the staging. He told me he has entered Carols Spanish Dancer in the sports class. He did show it last year at the show coming up on Sat, his sport is a cracker, i think it will walk it in that particular sports class at Harrogate. [/quote Aha......Hope you remember to take some pics for me...I'[m really interested in this one ;D

I would have been disapointed Paul if you had not received best small cactus in show, you certainly know how to grow those kiwi's. That Barbarry exhibit must have been very good for them to beat your exhibit.

The show finished up with 3 dahlia exhibitors. The late comer won both dahlia medals. I had two seconds and one first with the poms, received a trophy for the poms. Second with the 3 different sized seedling. Second with the mixed vase of Small Decs all different sizes again, the top bloom Rossendale Peach was rubbish if i do say so myself. First with the pom Moorplace The pom Trophy I had two entries in the veg section First for french beans First for a Carmen cucumber. Plus NVS silver medal for best veg in show Does this qualify me to join the winners board. ;D Hopefully i should have a lot more blooms to choose from next weekend. Congratulations Tel ;D

I will be filling out my entries for Harrogate at the end of this week, i will enter enough to keep my options open, because you will not really know what you have until the day you have to cut the blooms, because anything can happen overnight i know that from experience.

Gonna wait until late as possible to put my entries in tel a bit worried about size on some varieties double stopped my ruskin michelle this year to get more of a choice for middle of sept but they look a little small if they are I might drop it next year even tho I got a silver medal with it last year ,only growing it 4 up, could do with a med cactus that you can leave more on.Softer gleams look a little small to if they make a small ball it will be only just.Have you had any brenda t clock faced.
