Down to the allotment this morning, time to put the covers over the Kiwi bed now. Received the schedule for the Harden Beck show yesterday. This will be their 50th Anniversary on Sunday the 11th Sept. I wish all shows were like this village show. This is held on their show ground in a hugh polytunnel, the whole village seems to attend. Last year there were more than 130 exhibitors and there were 1400 individual entries. This show attracts a good mix of exhibitors from novices to gifted amateurs and the more serious growers who compete on the show circuit. The show will be opened this year by Joe Maiden, he is Radio Leeds' voice of horticulture and gardening. His radio programme was recently named top local radio broadcast in the country.

Thats a shame Tel The Halls advanced catalogue arrived today.. ;D....their prices hae gone up I see that they are classing Jomanda, Mary's Jomanda...and a few others as "dual small/min ball"..? Hi Lou Weston Miss is meant to be flatter of petal as its a semi cactus so in that regards and also keeping them within ring size I thinks its excellent. But form wise to me its shallow and centre blows at between 1/2 and 3/4 open (closer to the 1/2) so not overly impressed. Ive the Weston Pirate and Buccaneer all in bloom and I would say Pirate aguably is the more refined bloom. I have one plant of Weston S Dancer now in bloom and what a little cracker. Take Care, Paul

My Mary's Jomanda are tall plants too....much taller than the others. Are your Ruby's in flower yet Cherry....Mine are in bud but not showing any colour yet Well done Tel on your successes....Moorplace looks good ;D Ruby is nearly out. This must be a late one because the Jomandas were flowering the first week in July. I am glad the size of the plant is the same as yours and Tel's. Huge leaves too. I agree, Moorplace looks superb.

I'm looking forward to Buccaneer flowering though.....I notice Halls have Buccaneer on their list this year.....and a "Carol's Spanish Dancer"......red and white..........I can see all my promises to myself of "not buying anything new this year" are blowing out the window already I know what you mean about Miss.....but like you, not impressed with her form

I was talking to the raiser on Sat at the local show, he was asking me what was the best time to arrive at Harrogate to do the staging. He told me he has entered Carols Spanish Dancer in the sports class. He did show it last year at the show coming up on Sat, his sport is a cracker, i think it will walk it in that particular sports class at Harrogate.

Been looking at my brenda t tel and it looks like I may be going to have the same problem as you, got one about three quarters back but not a lot left in the centre. This is interesting because I have been looking to grow more small decs as the Dianes do not do it down here in Cornwall for any of us (too dampy), and I have been in contact with both Dave Gillam and Ian Sutherland. Dave suggested Brenda T, and I replied how Ive been told by local growers that she doesnt dress back on the stem before centre gone. Dave replied that small decs do not have to dress back and its just that we are used to the dressing back because the Dianes do it. So there we go! Dave suggested Marion Storer but I have heard mixed feelings about the stock of this one, and I do not see her at any of the shows. Ian suggested Rossendale Peach and Leopold Chloe. Now I have seen photos of Peach and only today a County grower says this is a good dahlia and weather hardy (although I will put her under cover). I grow and show Scaur Sunset in the main which is a good workhorse dahlia but not the refinement I want (also have one Ruby but its a bit chunky petalled, and another grower from Devon gave me a couple tubers his seedling which I am growing and its not bad, good stems, but a little light in petal to me). Any thoughts then folks? Regards, Paul
