Thanx Cherry I am being told by people its time to have a go at the big one at harrogate so need to grow more.I dont think another allotment will be a problem I know of a couple that havent been touched for ages and a bus load from the allotment society went to harrogate on saturday so I'm a bit of a celebrity down there at the moment. ;D Well enjoy your fame because you certainly deserve it. I don't think you had taken it all on board when I met you. You could not be described as demonstrative.

Ryecroft magnum never put a foot wrong either, even though it was grown badly and i didn't know what it was until it flowered. I'll be growing that, white Charlie Two and Rebel next year. As a guide from my garden, 5up White Charlie two, 7up Magnum and 8 up Rebel would get similar sized blooms.

In the Garden News this morning there is a report on the National Dahlia Society show at Shepton Mallet. It tells tells the story of Ian Sutherland winning the Terry Clark individual championship. He was also runner up for the best exhibit in the show!.He is the exhibitor who I told you about last week on "Derek,s diary"who was showing at Tottington where I was showing. He was supposed to be judging but he got somebody else to judge and showed himself.Staging was supposed to be on Saturday morning but he brought his flowers on the Friday night and of course they were all staged when I arrived on the Saturday. They were outstanding and I immediately knew that I didn,t stand any chance against him.No wonder he did so well at the National. He went to Ireland on the Saturday morning so he didn,t even come to the show to see what he had won.

Gonna think about it over winter tel I will need to get a large maybe another go at challenger got 2 plants in this year planted them deep and they didnt do to bad or maybe craigowen. The moonlights and dianes get used a lot in the individual championship and I dont grow them too well dianes damp far to easy for my liking. If I dont go for it I was thinking the small semi cactus championship, mini dec championship and the small decs again theres plenty of choice.a lot will also depend on getting the other garden I was thinking of growing about 360 under cover.

I may be able to help DC....I got excellent cuttings from Tel this year but my show schedule does not include large varieties...if they have made tubers you are welcome to them

Back from my day out at halls and still none the wiser of which other small semi cactus to grow.Other varieties that caught my eye were a small ball called grayval gem lovely flower but a very low grower only about two and a half feet tall and a medium dec called ryecrfot rebel good size and very clean considering it was outside. He also has a seedling of his own, a dark leaf yellow collerette called hoh ,I would not of normally given a collerette another glance but this was something special ,dark purple leaves and a beautiful yellow flower which at the time we were looking at it was covered in butterflies pity its not for sale yet I might have ordered some . On another note I handed a letter into the allotment chairman this morning asking for another alltoment when one becomes available.I need to wait for the right time to tell the wife. Hi DC I grew Ruskin Andrea for a couple of years. Its definately a 'big' small. I grew it 12up, no supplemntary feeding and still nearly every bloom oversize. As a comparison Ive grown Ruskin Respectable this year at 16 up and they go through the ring but not by much. Im not a fan of Andreas petalling as I think its short on petal, looks a little coarse/clumsy, and its that streaky pink colour. Ive always considered Oakwood Goldcrest to be by far and away the best ssc, but the opposite is true size wise, and I grow it 5 up and blooms are around 6 inches. I found with Cherwell Goldcrest that is was 'shaky' on the neck so dropped it. Still a dahlia that I love and at its best is superb is Kelsae Carla (u/c) but you need to plant out tiny plants (maybe 3 inches tall) as it rockets away and still requires some 'knock back'. Hope this helps. Paul
