started preparing for shrewsbury show today. Been around all the dahlias removing laterals that will be no use for anything. Just left with loads of buds on all the plants. Will start choosing the buds to grow on from wednesday to saturday.
Looks like quite a few of my Alvas supreme will be grown on a side bud again this year. Think i'm going to have to amend my stopping dates. Over the years, a 13th May stop meant i'd be getting blooms for mid August. They'll be ready by 1st august again if i leave them.

With all the different condititions we encounter it is not easy to time everything for the one show, a day early a day late. The number of times i have said to myself i wish the show was today, two days before a show. ;D

Now i have the 300 canes i was short off, i have now caned and tied in another bed of dahlias. Just the kiwi bed to do now, maybe tomorrow, all that bending to tie them in has given me back ache. I now could do with some liquid pain killer. ;D

As i said before, i'm growing a maximum of 6 plants of each variety and grow just about everything off a side bud, aiming for one bloom off each plant, so a bit of careful juggling with the buds should overcome the "conditions" we'll be getting between now and show time. In the really good years, i can get a mixture of side buds and the main one.....i'll know in a few days what sort of year it will be

Well I have had a few flowers off the cuttings I have just left to their own devices and the show ones have lots on the way by the looks. I am disappointed though as I bought some Sir Alf tubers and they have started flowering and they are some tiny red dahlia, definitly not Sir Alf!!

Garden centre / Supermarket packs cannot always be relied on, sadly.

It was a garden centre, knew I was taking a risk as they were reduced but still thought they would be the right variety lol.Never mind I will get some proper ones next year

I think i would have come out with a few expletives if i had been growing your Sir Alf's for one of my shows.

what varieties are you growing? With Mary's Jomanda, i never let the main bud at the top of each stem flower. I use side buds from lower down, or a wing bud depending on how far advanced they are.
