when's the best time to dig them up and move them? would it be ok after they've finished flowering?

I have moved them successfully after flowering Grindle but they are the devil to dig out. Unless you get every piece of root, and they go down deep, they will grow again in the original place.

Interesting. I'd heard that, but haven't experienced it myself. You can propagate from root cuttings, can't you.

You can Geranium, quite easily Beautiful as they are, they are a plant I would never buy again (bit like Acanthus) because they are almost impossible to move without leaving a bit of root behind which always regrows

I agree but i found you end up with three or four in the original place. Only three or four, you'll be lucky ;D I think you really need a large border as they leave a big gap when over.
